nostalgia

On this rainy, cold, tiring & stress-filled day, I'm yearning for my days back traveling to new and beautiful places. The weather & people is enough to make me never want to pause the memories swooshing around in my head.

Wearing Spring in Winter

We all know how very ahead the world of fashion is in regard to season. Currently, Spring 2013 is fully launched and its January....and in Buffalo, NY that means snow and wind and frost. And it'll probably stay this way until April (very depressing i know.) Regardless of the actual weather, the colours & promises of Spring are in every shop we see. It's hard to ignore the bright colours & dainty fabrics. This weekend I pulled out two outfits that held hints of spring while still being weather appropriate for good ole Buffalo. Here's what I wore:

// Outfit 1 // : dress: fossil, 45 $ // shirt: fossil, 38 $ //  tights: gifted, nyc //
// long-sleeved shirt: old navy, 6 $ // necklaces: charms: fossil / initial: DIY //
// boots: vintage store, london, 29£ //
+++

The colour-block shirt was new at Fossil for the spring line & I loved the neutral balanced with the neon yellow. The pink lace dress was from the spring collection last year. I wanted to be able to wear both these pieces together, so I pulled another neutral based long-sleeve to put underneath, matching the taupe coloured (& thick sweater-like) tights. Threw on some ankle booties to complete the look.

 // Outfit 2 // : silk dress: fossil, 25 $ // belt: uo, 20 $ // denim vest: thrifted, 5 $ //
// tights: anthropologie, 10 $ // necklace: DIY last summer // boots: icing, 17 $ //
+++

This silk dress had just gotten marked down & I was in love with the subtle colours and the swan print. The tights are inbetween a green and mustard yellow & were in the same colour family as the pastel turquoise swans, & the dark turquoise of the necklace. The vest is less heavy than a long-sleeved denim shirt or thick cardigan. By adding a tall riding boot, the outfit becomes a bit more winter appropriate.

The key to wearing spring inspired pieces even in the wintery days of the year is:
I // balancing brights with neutrals/ "winter colours"
II // layers, layers and more layers! start by adding lighter additions instead of that familiar heavy wool sweater

DIY --> from holiday gift tags to necklaces

I'm all about the DIY's & have been for quite some time. I love finding little odds & ends and transforming them into something beautiful. I'm also a sucker for making use of things that one wouldn't immediately think to be used for. (does that sentence even make sense?) ANYWAY, i was strolling through Anthropologie's sale section and found these little ceramic gift tags with initials on them. I immediately thought -- perfect. necklace. -- So i bought one for myself, my younger sister Alyssa, and my best friend Maria. In the bin next to the gift tags I found the turquoise & magenta coloured twine -- i can never resist turquoise anything. I decided that this would be a fun, quick, & cheap little project! With all five items the toal came to only 5 $ !! Originally everything would of cost 21 $ so I was super pumped. I headed over to the craft store to buy clasps for the necklaces, which cost 2$ with my 50% off coupon. (duh) The extra silver beads I had laying around the house from a previous jewelry project from over the summer, so I swiped those to add a bit more funk to the necklaces. Only other supplies I used were scissors! All in all, this project was super cheap, took little time & turned out to be really pretty!! [I think] Here's what I did:

  // S // -- I used my necklace as the "trial run" making sure that the twine and beads fit together. I used one piece of magenta twine and one of the turquoise twisting them together. I slipped a silver bead on either end of the tied S pendant, knotting all three in place.
// A // -- For Alyssa's necklace I wanted to try braiding the twine. I used two strings of turquoise and one strand of the magenta. I added two beads on either side of the pendant cos I thought mine was a little too plain.

 // M // -- For Mar's I did the opposite: used two strands of magenta and braided them with one strand of turquoise twine. Added three beads to each side of her M.

Thanks Anthro for always providing such lovely trinkets I can play with :)

an apple a day....

or two meals made with apples a day?! I've been having a serious craving for some crisp granny smith apples as of late & was trying to think of some creative ways to incorporate them into different meals. Ive always been a fan of slipping fruit into everyday salads to freshen them up a bit, so apples were no different. Pizza, on the other hand, could be harder to convince. I tried this recipe once over the summer & ended up really enjoying it, super sweet though! enjoy x

the shades of saturday

The weekend can mean a variety of things for each person-- It can mean relaxation, work, day trips, reading, exercise, homework, cleaning, errand running, grocery shopping, or laying in bed watching television series. After wearing three different outfits yesterday, Ive come to realize that there are many different shades of Saturday. Different activities throughout the day and night call for different kinds of looks:

+++++

Started off the day running errands with inbetween sips of coffee. It warmed up enough to not have to wear a jacket going in and out of the car & stores. I threw on a navy blue oversized sweatshirt & a chunky scarf to keep warm.

// sweatshirt: unfinished DIY [coming soon] // velvet pants: Gap, 22$ // floral bra: free people, 16$ //
// scarf: uo, 10$ // boots: Aldo, 180$ //

++

Later on in the day I was meant to go into work for a closing shift. Had thrifted the long black southwestern style maxi skirt & was dying to put it to good use. I figured what could be better paired with a southwestern skirt than a graphic tee saying 'Austin.'

// maxi skirt: thrifted, 2$ // graphic tee: fossil, 5$ // cardigan: target, 17$ //

+

Saturday night rolls around and I felt the maxi skirt should retire. I normally dont like wearing super tight clothing but this bodycon style dress is too comfy. I loved the long sleeves cos I was able to throw on a denim vest over the dress, making it more casual.

// dress: h&m, 15$ // denim vest: thrifted, 5$ // tights: gifted, nyc //

+++

The constant accesorries throughout all of saturday?  The layered necklaces, many rings & aztec socks, keeping my looks cozy & funky.

// triangle necklace: vintage market, london, 14£ // brown stone necklace, Icing, 2$ //
// socks: free people, 8$ //

Hope everyone enjoyed their Saturday!
